Laura Ling and Euna Lee to be tried in N. Korea

North Korea has decided to indict the 2 reporters who were investigating human trafficking and sexual slavery between China and N.Korea for the San Francisco-based Current Network.

North Korea has concluded an investigation regarding two detained American journalists, and they will stand trial, according to the nation’s state-run news service, KCNA.
“A competent organ of (North Korea) concluded the investigation into the journalists of the United States,” the news service reported Friday. “The organ formally decided to refer them to a trial on the basis of the confirmed crimes committed by them.
With the outrage and seeming momentum behind the Roxana Saberi case I continue to be surprised at the lack of attention on this case. Why is Al Gore and Current TV still mum on this issue??
Sign the Petition from the Pacific Alliance to Stop Slavery calling for their immediate release.

earth day is every day!

Trying to balance creativity with care for our environment... I use a lot of paper, and solvents to clean brushes etc so here are some alternatives...
Eco-friendly paints & pigments
Also, walnut oil paint is an alternative to oil paint - high pigment and no need for solvents.

And then why not have a compost bin (we just built our own box) outside your studio to fill with all the banana peels and apple cores for the monkeys you employ to create your work... That's how I do it :)!

Plus this is the coolest thing ever - Earthships
I want to visit one, build one. These homes are amazing, beautiful, and off the grid.

the fbomb blog.

Came across this site via a post on facebook today from Gloria Steinem...kudos to Julie Zeilinger for taking the teenage feminist reins with the fbomb. I love her site, and her commentary on social/feminist issues is spot on.

Free Roxana Saberi, Laura Ling and Euna Lee

Iranian-American journalist (and former Miss North Dakota) Roxana Saberi has been sentenced to 8 years in prison in Iran for spying.

Roxana had travelled to Iran and had lived there for 6 years, writing a book and working for NPR and the BBC. First she was arrested for buying a bottle of wine, then it was for expired press credentials, now they're saying she's a spy, despite zero evidence to support that. The trial was unusually fast, only taking 1-day, and her parents who had travelled to Iran were not allowed in to the courtroom to hear the verdict. Free Roxana Saberi

Also, Laura Ling and Euna Lee are still being held in North Korea on charges of spying, after being arrested while covering a piece for Current TV on N. Korean defectors who escape to China. I haven't heard anything about this lately and Current TV is completely mum on the subject, which although frustrating, makes me hope that efforts are underway to handle this delicately with the North Korean regime to free these reporters.

It seems to me these are antagonizing actions taken by these 2 countries to test our new President. With all of President Obama's recent overtures to North Korea and Iran I think it's time to toughen up. Please write President Obama as well as your Senators and Representatives to demand action be taken to engage North Korea and Iran to free these journalists.

Maria Shriver will explore status of U.S. women

LA Times, By TINA DAUNT April 16, 2009
Maria Shriver will explore status of U.S. women in tough economic times
She will collaborate with the Center for American Progress and USC in the new project.

California's First Lady Maria Shriver comes from a political family with a long interest in women's issues. Her uncle -- you might remember him, President John F. Kennedy -- appointed Eleanor Roosevelt to head a commission on the status of women.

Stone-throwing Afghan crowd swarms women's protest

KABUL – Hundreds of Afghans swarmed a demonstration of more than 100 women protesting Wednesday against a new marriage law they say restricts wives' rights. The women were pelted with small stones as police struggled to keep the two groups apart.

The law, passed last month, says a husband can demand sex with his wife every four days unless she is ill or would be harmed by intercourse — a clause that critics say legalizes marital rape. It also regulates when and for what reasons a wife may leave her home alone.

Women's rights activists scheduled a protest Wednesday attended by mostly young women. But the group was swamped by counter-protesters — both men and women — who shouted down the women's chants.

Eva Rothschild

Knock Knock, 2005, leather and steel support

Irish-born artist Eva Rothschild has been commissioned to create the next installation for the Tate sculpture gardens, June 29 – November 29, 2009.

This is the first time a single work has been designed to stretch nearly the full length of the space, over 70 metres. Using minimal materiality, the work fills and disrupts the grandeur of these neoclassical galleries with a chaotic, energetic presence.

Livia Marin

Untitled, aluminum

Remember those carved lipsticks @ MOCA's Poetics of the Handmade exhibition? That was the work of Chilean artist Livia Marin. These look like tongues and brains to me....

Wendy Ding.

Toronto-based Wendy Ding has some sweet graphic and vector illustration work but I am particularly drawn to her sketch work...

Green Porno with Isabella Rosellini.

Green Porno: Has anyone seen this yet? I don't get Sundance Channel, but I was driving along the other day and saw a billboard for it which promptly caused me to do a doubletake-- The first one was apparently about the sex lives of insects...this second season about marine mammals...

The critically acclaimed series from Isabella Rossellini is back with a new batch of very short films about the reproductive habits of marine animals. GREEN PORNO is scientifically accurate yet extremely entertaining. Produced by Isabella Rossellini, Jody Shapiro and Rick Gilbert.

Just makes me feel happy...

Flogging video shakes Pakistan peace accord.

Pakistani women shout slogans against the violence during a demonstration to condemn flogging of women, in Lahore on Friday, April. 3, 2009. Pakistani authorities ordered an investigation Friday into a video showing a man flogging a screaming woman in the country's northwest where the government recently agreed to introduce Islamic law to end a rebellion by Taliban militants. Who Does She Think She Is?

Directed by Pamela T. Boll. Awesome.

Sasha Grey + Soderberg = The Girlfriend Experience.

Very very very curious about this movie. And by the way, the design of this poster seems eerily similar to Natacha Merritt's Digital Girly erotic diary. Coincidence?

The Genius that is Samantha Bee.

Why doesn't she have her own show already? I was contemplating this the other morning and drafted off this email to Comedy Central:

Hello Masters of Comedy Central and the Daily Show. Upon reflection of Samantha Bee's utter genius this morning with my coworker who incidently wants to be her man slave we have begun to question why she does not have her own show as of yet. As we all know Comedy Central is a good ole boys network as far as the comedy goes but hey let's inject some female funniness in there as well. She deserves it, and it would surely be a hit.
What do you think? I encourage all her female fans to send a letter as well...
